Early to mid 90s Russia was not a fun place. After the gang of 8 tried to topple Gorbachev and failed, and we somehow ended up with buffoon Boris in charge the game changed. The USSR broke up. For its part in the coup Yeltsin ordered the KGB broken up. Even though a lot of us had remained loyal to the state. With a reduced agency a lot of the old guard were pensioned off, some found their skills in demand by the new type of businessmen, some set up on their own. Crazy times. I kept my job, missed out on promotion and eventually whilst advising a committee regards the future of Russian intelligence things got heated. I told buffoon Boris where to go, resigned and that was it. Always had a temper. Comes from having lots of older brothers. Fortunately they was content with shifting me out, so we went abroad.

Yes we had a minor disagreement which led to my resignation. After that I went freelance. And unlike a lot of my colleagues not the mafia.

Lets see, I've met 4 Russian presidents, (Andropov as head of kgb, Gorbachev for my Order of Lenin presentation, Yeltsin as local party leader and as president and Putin whilst in Dresden)
I'm sure your cooking isn't so bad.

It'll soon be time for the regular meet up anyway. Be plenty of discussions then.

No, money isn't the issue. I grew up under a nasty regime. I worked for said regime for almost 20 years, risked myself a couple of times, and you realise the flaws in it. Then it collapses and everything you'd worked for was gone. Then bright help of a new future dies as your country gets raped by corrupt criminals aided by those you spent your career fighting. And then a psychopath takes over and you see it all sliding back to the old days. No I can't go back, not with things as they are. Too outspoken. I've made a home here, families growing up, lifes what you make it. Good times and bad times. I miss the buzz of the old days, I don't miss all the sh**.

Of course, home is home, I miss family, and it was a large family, don't miss the cold. I miss hearing people speak. I've lived and worked here for best part of 30 years on and off and permanently for nearly 20. Brain still thinks in Russian. But I have family here now. It was good to go back, but wasn't easy. Luckily father is improved. I spent half my time in cemeteries. Philby's and Kryuchkins in Moscow. My nephew in Sverdlovsk or Yekaterinburg as its gone back to. See all the place names have changed. And the atmosphere isn't good.

O it was always fun making 2CD snap to attention. Then you come to a place like England and literally waved through. Ok diplomatic papers meant no fuss, but then walking around, using the tube, shock to the system. Moscow metro was always swarming with them. Course now with cameras everywhere its not as blatant. Hopefully I won't need to go back for awhile.

Never been there, not really a fan of the region, its the way they look at you.
I used to sometimes perversely enjoy being stopped.
"lets see you i'd eh comrade"
Pulls card out.
"carry on comrade major!"
Men!

I think its becoming less so. But western society has had more of it that than the old soviet bloc, the middle east, china for example. I think a lot of people in this country are in for a shock.
