In the 1920s, Edward Bernays created the field of public relations and was the first to apply Sigmund Freud's (Bernays' Uncle) theories of mass manipulation. He taught American businesses how to subtly appeal to people's subliminal wants by associating mass-produced commodities with things they didn't need.
As a key developer of contemporary mass-consumer persuasion strategies, Bernays employed every trick in the book, from eroticising the automobile to celebrity endorsements and absurd public relations stunts.
His most well-known accomplishment was convincing women that smoking cigarettes was a sign of freedom and independence, thus shattering the taboo against it.
However, Bernays was certain that this was more than just a ploy to market consumer products. It was a novel political concept for maintaining mass control. Content people were obedient, since they satisfied the deep, irrational impulses that his uncle had discovered.
It marked the beginning of the all-consuming self that has taken over the modern world.
