I do feel sorry for some of these people who risk a lot to travel half way around the world from hell holes, trying to get to a better life and make some money and then end up living in dingy hellholes, 6 or more to a room working 40+ hours a week and paid a slave wage.

And to think Labour contributed to this, with the dismantling of the borders and the introduction of the minimum wage, makes my blood boil! You expect those kind of shenanigans from the Tories. Not the party created by the workers for the workers.

My reply to Franky was not in anyway associated with political correctness. Perhaps I didn't explain myself properly and maybe I should have clarified my statement in the way Mort replied. You however seem to class me as one of the brainwashed people because I dare address how I viewed the topic. I in no way consider myself to have any level of moral authority above another person. However, I do feel your response is more expressive of one who deems themselves morally superior as you judge me brainwashed by government. I am the furthest imaginable from having 'government brainwashing' as you put it. The fact I raised the question of 'nationalism' seems to have upset your sensibilities. I am on this site because I find it informative and enjoyable when seeking information outside of the mass media rubbish that we are fed every day. If for some reason my comment offended you personally then I apologize. Isn't blaming foreigners for a country's troubles the oldest trick in the book? It has been used repeatedly by governments to brainwash the people, people who do not see the truth of a governments failings. I actively seek out the links you place on here so maybe I've been brainwashed by this site instead :-)

Ed it seems that you are the one who is brainwashed. The ideas of nationalism and patriotism are the biggest tools of mind control ever invented apart from religion.
People have a right to live and work wherever they want. Just because you are fortunate enough to be born in a place with a higher standard living than most doesn't give you a monopoly over it. We're all human beings, no state or organization should have the right to limit one's right to exist where they want to exist.

If wanting to get rid of the monarchy and stopping a influx of nationalities coming to this country for work then lining the pockets of greedy corporations who want them to work for buttons which undercuts the British workers, I don't know why you are bringing religion or the color of skin in to it , its simple more people are getting shafted with the minimum wage doing a 30 to 40 hour week different nationalities are willing to do that and in some cases not all but the money goes out the country to were they were born, and who stands to gain? the agency's and corporations who hire them, as for the menial job that is beneath us, give a decent wage and you will find people putting there hand up, this is not a attack on honest decent workers from abroad this is a attack on the corporations who want more more and more money.

cheers for the update melbourne. It is getting a problem in pretty much every first world country. We're handicapped with europe's daft human rights laws that say we have to put them up when we should be putting them straight on a plane back. Don't get me wrong I don't mind helping people who genuinely need it but when people are crossing half the continent just to get here because we're seen as a soft touch it is out of hand. The welfare state was created as a safety net for the genuinely disadvantaged, not for all and sundry, foreign and domestic to dip into. And its about time we went back to what it was created for. I think the governments however want these people here. Its like that guy said the other week, the creation of a slave class to do all the rubbish jobs. They don't mind minimum wage and won't kick up a fuss as they can simply be kicked back out. Mort

You'd be surprised Mort. Australia is currently seeing the biggest influx in foreigners for a long time. The most alarming thing is most are coming illegally, on boats, in the knowledge they will be taken to a processing centre, where they will be fed and get shelter. Now these ILLEGAL immigrants are complaining that the conditions in these processing centres are not up to scratch and the oz government has to help them, at a cost to the taxpayer. Some of these 'boat people' have so much nerve that they are calling our Navy, while in Indonesian waters, and claiming that their boat is sinking. When the navy gets to them, they realise this isn't the case and that the boat operators just want the Navy to taxi them back to Oz.

Now, like you, I have absolutely no problem with qualified workers coming and helping certain industries, where job shortages come about and when they take the correct avenues in obtaining working visas, however, it is becoming more and more about people coming solely to receive benefit payments and have our Goverment take care of them, whether they come legally and sit on the dole, or illegally and get put up in a processing centre at a cost to me and the rest of Australia. It's bs mate and the Australian government needs to act accordingly. It's becoming a serious problem on our shores mate.

i've no problem with qualified foreigners coming here to work. After all the nhs would probably have collapsed without all the foreign nurses and doctors who come over. Anyone who's spent anytime in a and e will appreciate that. My dentist is romanian. Lovely girl, best dentist i've ever had and not just because she is extremely pretty either. I do feel that some of these countries would be better served by the best and brightest staying put and improving their countries rather than a brain drain to britain. But the issue I think most people have are those coming for the benefits which I think should be restricted. It should be like canada or australia no job no entry. Mort

I am surprised at this statement by a poster I enjoy reading on here. You do realise Franky that the entity that is Britain, like its empire before it, has been, is now and will continue to be sustained by people who are not British. What next only Church of England people need apply for the jobs. After that maybe only white British people for the jobs. I appreciate your post in no way advocates anything like I suggest above, nor have you ever in a post I might add. However, if as a society we restrict access to jobs, and the benefits they bring, solely based on a nationalistic view then the outcome will be a form of Fascism, as it always has been. I hear the same idea here in Ireland about foreign people 'taking our jobs'. The answers will never be found by blaming people who simply strive to live a better life and in most cases end up doing the jobs some people now, for whatever misguided reason, deem menial.

I would get rid of the monarchy all together if they wanted to live here tax them threw the ass like everyone else, no privileges and see how long they would stay until they fled to a tx haven country, then I would raise the minimum wage and make it only british born citizens can apply for the jobs that would mean no mass exodus to this country from foreigners to undercut and work for buttons, as for politicians I would make it a lot easier for independent people who want to run our country and get the same crack of the whip and airtime as the three hybrids labour/cons/libs.

Yeah agree we may not have the Royal family here in Ireland but Enda Kenny earns more than O Bama! Now that sure as hell should not be!

I like that. Good suggestion. Although i'd end the whole expenses rubbish first make them live within their means on their already generous wages. I'd cut the number as well by around ten per cent that would save another shedload. I'd still trim the royals down as well though. And the house of lords can go.

Nothing has been mentioned about the body of the British man (mathematician code breaker) found in a locked suitcase in London who had just started working within mi5 or mi6.

Totally agree last poster, wish it would happen here a lot more often! Country's are being washed with illegal immigrants, thanks to the governments feeble stance on capturing and deporting, heck they even allow immigrants into this country who have criminal records. total insanity. I remember the hit and run in England where the driver (an illegal immigrant) hit a girl and didn't call for help, she later died. When he was finally caught it was revealed he had actually been caught before and convicted of driving offences, but he wasn't deported as he had a child here. Total madness.

Why not continue with MPs? Do they really need a salary larger than most? Do they need to claim for a second home? Why not cap their wage at the national average? Then convert a disused building into communal housing for MPs?
