Forgive my ignorance on this subject Franky but how come the labour guy (McShane?) gets jail time, but she gets a pat on the back, and is told carry on your job is safe? Am I missing something here?
Ryan.

Yes you also have the 50 year and 100 year rule for the really secret stuff.
Alas I am unable to name names but I do have a quiet chuckle when I see certain names.

I would be guessing if I just named random names but let's just say I genuinely think there are top politicians of that time and royalty, around the time of the KP scandal you had the profumo affair which involved the Secretary of State for War so as kim said it was rife with soviet spies and why I think the monarchy had spies is simple, the Declassification files usually get disclosed every 25 years this case is over 50 years now and its something the establishment do no want to get out.

I have my own hunch on various names that are hidden.

Of course he was expendable, we all are. Just pawns in a giant relentless chess game.
And its highly likely he was allowed to defect to avoid a publically humiliating trial, which would have resulted in certain things coming to light including names. You British can't face a scandal.
The files are still hidden to protect various names. Some are still alive but are fairly doddery.
As I said some of the names are fairly surprising.

Kim he was a spy at the end of the day but there is no doubt in my mind he was expendable and whether he was allowed to escape I would not know, its the secret files that interest me more, if it was more on KP then why not release them to the public?the establishment need someone to take the blame but I get the impression people way higher than philliby are the real culprits hence why files are still not disclosed.

Franky bear in mind he spent almost 30 years as an agent and only under suspicion for a small part of that time. I'm not saying he was some sort of super spy and I do think you British have over cooked the pudding a little to give the excuse you were duped by a brilliant master. But it was a good run. You also have to bear in mind just how throughly the kgb had penetrated the British establishment and the magnificent 5 were held up to younger generations as the pinnacle. Although I agree that film was a joke, everytime he lied he smiled afterwards. Bit of an easy tell. If you really are using that as training footage I hope its on how not to do it.
As I said last night you never hear anything about the other major ring active at the time, the Oxford ring. On my first trip to London I was amazed at some of the people we were getting Intel from. And some of who I recruited as well, well I don't think those names will be out anytime soon.

KP was a traitor in the sense he gave information to Moscow there is no question about that but at the same time the amount of lives he had is absolutely astonishing.
some things I found out about KP late last night by a twitter friend who was a top barrister a few years ago and has interesting stories about various subjects, I will quote what he typed, (like I said I do not know enough about the feller)
ian
Kim Philby: Ben Macintyre saying how plausible Philby was. The film of him denying guilt showed someone only an person would trust
me
i watched the philby documentary, what's your take on him?
ian
As a person? I think he secretly hated his own background, which was mixed. Mother Anglo-Indian, father a maverick pro-Arab.
me
do you think he was a scapegoat?even in the doc there was nothing concrete and files still classified.
ian
Scapegoat? Philby was, if you like, a traitor, in the ordinary usage, but it has suited both sides to make him out to be "brilliant"
me
2 me the bbc making out that KP was this great spy is ridiculous. why not look @ like jeremy thorpe? or is that 2 sensitive considering he is first cousin of the queen.
ian
If Kim Philby was great spy and even great mind, then that validates NKVD/KGB and excuses SIS/MI6 and the Security Service/MI5.

Hence on the documentary the bbc never gave any solid evidence that KP was this treacherous spy, in other words the show says" trust us"
as I am always skeptical of our great BBC propaganda machine and to be honest they seem to forget about another spy called Jeremy thorp, maybe its because he was a first cousin of the queen.

I believe a lot of files are still locked away Franky. In that game its all about betrayal, the constant lies gets stressful. Was having a similar discussion on Tuesday night with a couple of old friends. Its an odd business, living on nerves and adrenaline. The other member has never been officially confirmed after all, and the other major spy ring has never been revealed.

Interesting documentary more a betrayal about friendship than anything concrete in the documentary.

Alright mate I would suggest reading his free edition chapters and see if you like them, I will give you the link and scroll down to just under half way down until you come to "some published tales" where there are different chapters on strange paranormal events that happened.
Toxteth Bloodsuckers is the first story then theirs another 20/30 stories that are free, it will give you a clue if you want to buy any of his in books.

I'm embarrassed to say that, although I am aware of Tom Slemen, I have not read any of his books. This despite the good feedback I have heard from those who have. Embarrassed because he is a local author (to you and me both mate) and his genre is very interesting.
Anyway, I just wanted to confirm, to those unfamiliar with St. John's Beacon, how scary it is being at the top when the wind is howling about it. I remember going countless times when I was a kid, in them days it was a restaurant rather than a radio station. It was a pretty frightening ordeal (if heights aren't your thing) when the wind rocked it from its foundations. As you say mate, years of being weather beaten must surely take it's toll on such a structure. If nothing else it is certainly an iconic Liverpool building.
Can you recommend any of Tom's books please Franky?

Agree with you edd.
Read discussionFunny enough I have watched the "devils ride" a reality tv show, I know these type of shows are glamoured up and and can not be taken serious but what I do find interesting is the amount off (unseen connections to high profile people)and the amount of cash involved, in other words its a corporation and with corporations the head honcho is invisible, so your right it does sort of tie in with things we discuss on here.
now edd I will be honest I have been trying to find out more about you, from various sources (who will not speak)and I have even gone thru old posts you have described various things you have done, like I know your from the states, older than me, been married a few times, a chelsea fan, has connections in football and music.
now not to blow my own trumpet I am good at researching things even little things but trying to get any information on you is like trying to find bin laden's ashes.
nothing stalkerish about my interest I just find it interesting the circles you have and still mix in and in some ways I genuinely think you know a lot more conspiracies than most of us.
