double standards from frankyscouse, gods a fraud due to lack of proof but aleins walk amongst us even with lack of proof.
sweeping generalisations from jay all religions are untrue.

way to keep an open mind!

as I see it :

a diamond ring (spirituality) has been eaten by a dog (time) and passed out the other end as dog poo (religion).

dig thru the s*** is all i'm saying.

out of interest, jay how many faiths/religions can you name? no google search that's cheating

I believe God and the story of God (all of them) is an analogy to something that the ancient civilizations couldn't explain.

bit derogatory.

lack of respect to anothers beleifs. very openminded.

surely openminds to expose double standrads and look beyond sweeping generalisations is what forums like this is about.
you would jump all over me if I LOL'd your thoughts on 9/11 or anything else you held veiws about.
disagreement is good, to see opposite sides of a coin helps to educate, but to ridicule is unintellegnt.
you may need more research into the ancient civilizations, they understood a lot more than what modern textbooks say. Graeme Hancock has done some good work, his lectures on consciousness and cave art are thought provoking.

They did, they knew a lot about the solar system. but how did they know this and why is there 10 planets in their drawings?

Also, the "they're out in force" was meant in jest, I was just thinking before I put that, that we don't see many people on here "calling others out" but two turn up in 1 day.
It reminded me of the buses where none come for ages then two arrive at once. I didn't mean offence by it.

My replies haven't been getting posted in the last few days, so I'll take care to be careful with what I'm saying, as to avoid causing offence.

The religions/faiths I'm familiar with are, Christianity, Judiasm, The Mormon Faith, and Islam. Albeit more personally with Christianity. I know of more, such as Buddhism, Hinduism and all the others most have heard of. So there's your answer.
Thing is, all these religions, and every other one that's out there, are based on older/ancient beliefs. Anyone who can read, can see themselves by reading religious texts, and texts of the ancients, that religious groups have "borrowed" their main tales from the ancients. The epic of Gilgamesh itself is quite the read, and becomes ever so familiar when you've heard the exact same story in a church/synagogue/mosque etc. So in short, religion can say what it likes, but they are all one in the same, lies. Mark Twain once said " religion started when the first co man met the first fool" You'll have noticed I've not mentioned the whole Mormon concept. Reason being, it's complete silliness. If you've read or know of Joseph Smith, you'll know what I'm on about.

Listen Stevie, these are just my personal opinions, if you feel so strongly about your belief, my opinion shouldn't irk you the way it seems to do. Your opinion won't, and doesn't concern me, as it won't change my train of thought. Although I really do hope you reply and we can continue this discussion further.

Franky was merely stating what he personally feels on the subject of god, that's up to him, like it's up to you which you chose to believe or disbelieve. So why are you so wound up with someone's opinion?

Peace

{Ed007's Note - I'm a practising RC Jay, and the way I look at it is that if people choose not to follow a religion then that's their choice, just as it is my choice to keep following mine. Believe me, I am very, VERY far from your typical bible-bashing, ram religion down others throats type of guy but there are certain times of my life my religion has helped me more than harm me, that doesn't mean I am right about it or telling you you're wrong mate.
All religion is a faith and I have my faith, when I die and find out if it's all a crock of 5h!t or not who have I harmed in the process?
If I am right or if I am wrong I really haven't lost anything by living my life (eventually) in the right way of respecting others views and opinions, helping others through problems just as I once needed someone else's help, learning to love and respect my parents and others etc etc.
In my opinion the breakdown of religious values has to shoulder some of the blame for societies ills, religion whether right or wrong has surely helped keep the world going so long? People are too quick to blame religion for so many wars but forget the good parts of it, teaching Joe Dirt right from wrong, is stealing or killing right because the Bible says it's wrong? How else would simple people understand these things if it wasn't taught in churches etc hundreds of years ago when there was no schools to educate the poor. Just as is it caused so many problems surely it has helped many, many more. Whether that is blind faith who are we to really judge?
I'm not saying that religion is the answer to everything but surely when you are on a site like this you must keep an open mind to other's beliefs and show them respect, exactly the same way you want your own opinions and beliefs to respected.
Only a few years ago I lost my father to cancer, it is one of the worst times of my life (and there has been a few of them to compete) but towards the end, night after night the close family gathered in the room at my mam's where he was and prayed, not that he would get better that wasn't going to happen, but to pray that when the end came he would be pain free and in a better place.
Now I don't know if my dad is in better place Jay, but I would like to think he is and I hope (and pray) when it's my time he will be there waiting on me, nothing that gets said on sites like this is going to change people's beliefs or faith mate.
I personally believe that without religion and it's teachings over the years the world would actually be a far worse place than it is. Most people are dumb, they need someone to keep them on the straight and narrow, without that there would be anarchy, and what would happen then? The exact same thing, personal greed would eventually take over but false deities would be worshipped, look at North Korea and places like that as an example of having no religion. Would you rather live there, Jay?}

Stevie, while I can't disagree with your thought process, I think there is far more available evidence that aliens have made contact, then there is a god/gods.

My beliefs on religion is expressed in the below video. A must watch.

I'll just bullet all I want to say.

1. What if God is an alien? The way some things are laid out in religious texts support this. The ancients knew a lot of things but the problem was how to communicate this across time. How would you describe an aeroplane to someone who has never seen one before?

2. Religion doesn't start wars, its just the reason given for a war. Wars are over power, land, money, resources. Religion is just window dressing for masses to make them feel that the war is justified. It went out of vogue to be replaced by nationalism but now that's out of vogue and religion has come back in parts.

3. Faith doesn't harm anybody, I've never experienced religious faith. I was born in the Soviet Union, our faith was the Party and the cult of Marx and Lenin. But faith in anyway is important to people, you have to have something to believe in. Collapse in faith is a bad thing to witness and 1989-1991 was a shock to many. A lot of Russians flocked back to the churches when they reopened.

Stevi I am not knocking anyone's view on religion, I am a roman Catholic but I do think it's a big lie and the biggest double standards are when we kill each other over different religions and gods.

I seem to have sent too early so I will carry on

4. I agree with Editor 007, there has been a decline in societies morals as religion has become less important. As an outsider who travelled here numerous times before settling here I have noticed the differences more sharply than others who have always been here to who its been more of a slow erosion barely noticed. You see things today that you didn't 30 years ago.

I'm not saying there needs to be a massive swing back to religion so get your hairshirts on. I despise religious fundamentalism and extremism. But some sort of return to basic morals and decency. Anyone who is a parent or grandparent and has seen modern music videos knows that they are very wrong.

5. We are all here to learn about things we have an interest in and to learn about new things we didn't know or thought of. Whether its gods or aliens no one can indisputably prove one or the other. Its probably both. let's have good discussion with evidence and theory without resorting to name calling and being nekulturny.

Terrific post KP.

Like you I abhor religious fundamentalism and extremism. Although I have no belief personally in any God and don't subscribe to any religion, I also feel uneasy with an apparent growing erosion of basic values and decency in society generally.

For far too long large organised religious groups have attempted (quite successfully) to indoctrinate their followers with the belief that their brand of morality is the most righteous. Worse than that for me though, is the way they inextricably link morality with their religion and it's doctrine.

Religion is a great source of comfort for so many people, and I have great respect for that. It gives people a sense of purpose and meaning and a sense of community and a common peer approved set of values.

However, morality is not dependent on religious belief. A good moral compass is something that can be developed and nurtured in any human. Empathy, intelligence and compassion, are some of the more obvious attributes you will find in any decent person with a strong moral compass.

Large scale organised religion is great in the way it can reach out to so many people at once, but we each have to take responsibility for our own actions independently of any religious beliefs, and be guided by our own sense of right and wrong, and we must take great care as a society what we teach to children.

It seems 'me' has become so much more important than 'we' these days. There seems to be a growing selfishness in the world today. People seem to be more obsessed than ever with the needs of the individual. Narcissism not only is on the rise, but is actively encouraged and has become the norm in western society. Yes it is important to develop and cherish the individual, but we must never overlook the essential truth that without a genuine care and interest in each others' welfare and happiness our own individual experiences are greatly diminished.

Agreed Ryan.

I would say a lot of it is cultural contamination from America. People see the likes of the Kardashians, who have no real talent or skill taking in millions of dollars and appearing on tv and being famous for doing what exactly?

Then we have the likes of the x factor, britains got talent, big brother. Everyone wants to get rich and famous and do it in 5 minutes. And they mistake notoriety for fame so its a downward spiral of doing more vile acts to become infamous and get the money.

And people on tv are always so rude to each other, this is then copied and repeated. There is no respect anymore.

Growing up we had no religion, we had the party. But the soviet union had some of the lowest crime statistics in the world. We had no God, no priests or churches but we still had morals. We were terrified of our father growing up as if we misbehaved we knew it was a trip to the woodshed and i'd like to think we turned out ok. But then our parents generation fought the Nazis, more venerated than respected. My father went from Stalingrad to Berlin how do you disrespect a man who has been through that.

I speak with many English people of my generation and they say the same things. I think its a combination of the permissiveness of the 60's, the disillusionment of the 70's and the excess of the 80's which has led to a general collapse of societal relations with regards to mutual respect and decency.

The US is a country that seems to me to be completely lacking in compassion KP. It doesn't take care of it's weak and vulnerable. I agree sadly we are seeing more and more 'cultural contamination' from America. It's an apt phrase.

We are conditioned to believe that the more material goods we gain, the happier we will become. But it's not working. It's going to take an massive shift in consciousness for that to change and I'm afraid I don't see that happening any time soon.

Hi ed. I'm more than aware the good religion can do, seen it with my own eyes. And In no way am I trying to make people feel daft for believing. I just don't think we as a people should be governed with religious persuasion Is all. If it makes people happy, that's a good thing. It's when stuff like, gays shouldn't be allowed to be married, shops shouldn't sell this or that, etc. It annoys me, as their personal beliefs then become forced on the public, which isn't right or fair.
I'm all for people believing what they want, but not forcing their beliefs on others, as happens in this country!
Separation of church and state would be best for all, then no one religion is favoured over any other, and no religious ways are implemented on our ways of life!
I've got a few friends who say they believe in god, but not a religious one. To me, that's better than believing any religious god, especially when you know and have read all the atrocities these gods green lighted in their holy books. I suppose I'd tend to think there's more of a chance, ever so slightly just more, that if there were to be a god, then he/she would have to be another being from another world, far more technologically advanced being. But that is only conjecture and speculation, and most likely not true. The thing is, we know we'd be here with or without a god, the science and evidence is their to support this.
How anyone would want to actively want to worship one of the evil, sadistic gods of the holy books, is really beyond me. The sad thing is, most don't know about the darker parts of their holy books. As a lot of believers haven't even read the bible, sounds crazy, but it's true. So they believe what they here at their chapels, churches, synagogues etc. As you're not going to hear the twisted and selfish sides of the bibles in any house of worship.
Anyway, I personally think the story of evolution, the fact we are made of the same stuff as the stars, all that stuff is much more palatable to me. Makes life feel that more special, knowing the odds of actually being a human being here today. And there's always knew findings on the horizon and new theories. The mystery of life is a beautiful one, and it really is ok not to know all the answers, science definitely hasn't ever claimed to do so. The findings of other worlds like ours, in the same Goldilocks zones, all that stuff truly is remarkable. But that's just me I suppose.

Each to their own, and no one should force their way on others!

Peace

Jay

{Ed007's Note - Absolute claptrap Jay! You have contradicted yourself and shown an ignorance that is all too common today throughout your reply:

"I'm all for people believing what they want, but not forcing their beliefs on others, as happens in this country!"

So people can believe what they want as long as it suits you and you can force what you believe on others, that's what you are trying to do here. You're not religious, we get it - but don't be so dismissive of other's views. Throughout history there are men far more intelligent than you or I who have held strong religious beliefs.

I have gave my opinion without trying to force anything on anyone and I also kept my answer to looking at some of the positives religion has done and is still doing, you started off agreeing with me then went on a rant about how evil the Bible and other holy books are, all the while forcing your own point on people. How can something so evil also do so much good? You have admitted to seeing the good it does with your own eyes ffs!!!

My overall point is if people choose to follow religion it is nothing to do with anyone else, that's why it is a personal faith - and all your ranting on here like some rabid hate-preacher is never going to change that.

Do you hold the same viewpoint about other subjects such as science, the arts, medicine etc, they all have many differing opinions in the field.... Remember people thought the world was flat and was the centre of the universe, one person's art is another's person's eyesore and what about people who believe in holistic or natural health remedies over pharmaceutical ones.

People have choices to make and whether you agree with them or not they are people's own choices, you never answered my question if you would rather live in a religion free zone like North Korea?

As a Glaswegian you should know better than most the serious social problems religious intolerance can cause, you're just as guilty of that as the knuckledraggers who attach themselves to our football teams, march in their sectarian parades and try to browbeat people into their way of thinking.

This nonsense you're spouting about believing in God but not a religious one comes across as very Masonic orientated with their worship of any chosen Supreme Being.}

There are two Americas, the coasts tend to be liberal, secular and wealth obsessed whilst the interior is more conservative, religious and less obsessed with the trappings of wealth. It really is a contrast when you travel through the place. However its the coasts that produce the cultural entertainment and thus drive the standards and desires of society. The American Way of honest business and success through hard work has become corrupted into a fame at all costs mentality. The American Dream is turning into a nightmare. The message of you must be famous, you must be rich, you must own a mansion, a Ferrari, a trophy partner or your nothing, is all through film, tv, music videos etc. These are splashed around the world show casing the American Dream, causing cultural contamination. Societies that have been exposed to it longest have begun to crack. Societies that haven't had this prolonged exposure, such as the more religiously conservative middle eastern countries are prone to violent outbursts of anti Americanism which in turn leads to an increase in American interference to "turn then into us" through cultural brain washing.
