Discussion #2298Talk Sense

05 Jan 2015 17:50:02
Afternoon chaps, just wanted to know everyone's feelings regarding Ched Evans and his return to football. I live about 5 minutes from Boundary Park, have done since getting married, and have been to Oldham home games quite a few times when United haven't been playing. Personally, I think what he did was an absolute disgrace, and for that he was rightly punished, in line with the laws of the land, although it think rapists should be castrated along with the prison sentence. That said, I don't think he should be stopped from returning to football.

He should be allowed back but there should be certain agreements in place when he does. It should include things like voluntary work to raise awareness and show kids how wrong what he did was, possibly undergo some kind of counselling, maybe agree to donate a decent percentage of his income to rape victim charities etc. He earns a lot more than most people who have been found guilty of rape and is a well known figure, so he could be used to do good for charities and try to help prevent youngsters from doing what he did in the future.

I just don't see why every sponsor of a club should jump ship or threaten to, along with countless petitions and random celebrities spouting off every time his name is linked to a club, forcing said club to end their interest. If he had done what he did to my daughter, then he would now be missing something he holds very dear, but I don't feel that myself, as someone who doesn't know either him or the victim, should have any right to say what he can or can't do, and that should go for anyone else not related to the case aswell, in my eyes. He has the right to work in his chosen profession having done the time for his crime, whether we think the length of time he did was enough or not.

Just interested to hear others views. So far of the people I have talked to about it, I would say it is 50/50 on whether he should be allowed or not.

The Abominable Phenomenon
He shows no remorse or acceptance of guilt so he's not going to be any use for charity work!
I'm torn on the issue tbh. He's done his crime & his time and should be allowed to get on with his life. But as long as he's in the public eye playing football that is possibly further damaging to his victim.
{Ed001's Note - he hasn't done his time though has he? He has done part of his time! Personally I don't think he should be allowed back, if I was a sponsor I would immediately remove my sponsorship from the club. There are some things that are just unforgivable.}

The Abominable Phenomenon
Yes, I didn't realise he's still serving his time albeit on licence.
People do deserve a second chance and to be able to put things right but it's too big a gamble for a football club when it starts interfering with their income etc. It's also a bit of a non-starter if he cannot accept his guilt, but that won't be happening if he honestly believes himself to be innocent.
{Ed001's Note - sorry but a crime like rape is not one I feel anyone deserves a second chance after committing.}

The Abominable Phenomenon
There are no easy solutions to aberrant behaviour. What is completely neglected in our society is the root cause of a great deal of crime, and any attempts to remedy social disease. Only the punishment is considered. It's dealing with the symptoms rather than the cause.

I didn't realise he was serving the time on licence either. He needs to wait until he has paid his whole time then before being considered for a comeback. Obviously the acceptance of 100% guilt first should also go without saying.

Lee Hughes got a second chance after killing someone whilst drink driving. That is no better than rape as far as I am concerned, they are both deplorable acts. But if he was allowed, I don't see how Evans can't be, it has to be one rule for all and the precedence has been set.
{Ed001's Note - I wouldn't have had that prick Hughes back, or that goalkeeper either. Sports should be more than just about winning, there should be some real moral meaning to it or you lose the whole value of sportsmanship. Sadly I think there is no such thing left, just money.}

What if he is innocent, as he claims? Surely on a website where people claim that adolf hitler wasn't the monster that history proclaims, then surely we discuss the possibility that maybe the courts/ jury got it wrong, as Evans claims. He must have advisers telling him to say sorry etc, so he can resume his footy career, but would you say sorry for a crime you didn't commit? Everything on here is questioned, from the Boston bombings to the moon landings, but not one person has questioned this. Political correctness gone mad, or a subject too far even for this site?? I personally think that if he is guilty, then castrate him, but I think he deserves to have the same open minded debate/ reasoning that some of histories "monsters" have on this site.

He shouldn't in my opinion be aloud back into the public if he has commited rape, his second chance in society should be working at morrisons or some other low paid job like the rest of us, having said that I don't think he's done it, take a look at his website, chedevens.com I think and evidence stacks in his favour.

Am surprised a 2nd rate footballer is the big topic rather than the claims that prince andrew has been doing exactly the same thing, my take on CE if he really is innocent as he claims then take a independent lie detector and if it comes back clear then all well and good, if it comes back he lied, well you know the rest.

Franky, lie detector tests have been demonstrated to be inaccurate.

Lie detectors have been proven to yield false positives, when the person interrogated is under duress.
Additionally, they have also been proven as being unable to tell the difference between a truthful answer and a lie. This is the case, when the person taking the test has undergone relevant training.

Lie detector design is based on the false perception that the variables they detect are products of reflex functions, rather than voluntary ones. There are people who by concentrating can control their heart beat and/or raise their body temperatures. Lastly, one has to consider that sociopaths and compulsive liars also exist.

You are probably right guys my point is if that was me I would put all thoughts of my football career on hold until I tried every possible avenue to vindicate myself including a lie detector test.

The issue here is social media. Lee Hughes did far worse, did get grief, as did Oldham who gave him a route back into football, but it died down soon after. I believe Lee Hughes served 3 years for killing one (look it up for more info).

As abhorrant as rape is, it's not manslaughter or murder. 10 years ago there wasn't social media (it was in it's infancy) and now it's widely used, and married to news media, who now feed off it and to it.

My concern is that 10 years ago Lee Hughes committed a far worse offence and got back into football. 10 years later, today, and Ched Evans shouldn't be allowed to resume his only trade in second or third tier football. Where will we be in another 10 years? Chopping off the hands of thieves?

Surprise at your hatred for him ed001.
Considering u believe in conspiracies, is it so hard to believe he is infact innocent?
I just don't see why a guy on £20,000 a week would rape someone.
The fact that he still maintains his innocence is another thing as well.
Had he pleaded guilty he would have got less time.
I think he's innocent
{Ed001's Note - I am sorry but he is not innocent, the only question is whether he took advantage of a drunk woman who was willing or whether he took advantage of a drunk woman who wasn't willing. There is only degrees of guilt and he is just another mysogynistic prick who thinks it is ok to treat women badly. It is common in football, but it doesn't mean it is acceptable, nor should it be accepted by those of us who think more of women than toys to be used and abused at our discretion. Your whole crap about why a guy on that money would do it is just idiocy. I lived next door to a woman who was raped by a drummer from a rock band, I forget which rock band it was now, but they are internationally famous and he was extremely wealthy. He was found guilty and accepted it, so it is not just hearsay, though allowed to jet off on tour around the world anyway by the judge.

Rape is not about sex. It is about power. It is a vile crime and until he is acquitted of it, he has to be treated as guilty.}

If a teacher was convicted of rape would it be OK to resume working in a school after prison? Some occupations deny the right to resumption after serving a sentence because of their very nature. Child/teenager protection, being in the public eye as a role model etc. If you enter into these occupations -Doctors, Lawyers, Accountants - you must be aware of the massive consequences if you transgress.

U seem to have it in for him ed001.
Have u been nightclubbing?
Girls get drunk and have sex with guys all the time. Doesn't make them rapists.
And how is my point about money stupid? Who would throw there extremely good life away to have sex one night.
Maybe I have sympathy because it happened to a mate I mine and he was innocent. Luckily the girls friends told police she admitted the guy never.
I just don't think he's guilty.
And it's some timing, comin out hogging all the news while
Prince Andrew is barely mentioned.
His gf stuck by him as well and not for money as her dad is a millionaire.
Surprised your so quick to judge ed001.
{Ed001's Note - his gf obviously did do it for the exposure, as why else would you stand by a guy who, at best, cheated on you? What the hell is going nightclubbing got to do with it? I have never forced myself on a woman or taken advantage of one, but I am not interested in power and that is what rape is all about. Your points are just not points at all, they are ignorant. You don't even understand what rape is. Stop talking about sex, it is not about sex. This is pointless, you obviously think taking advantage is ok, because someone else does it. Shows a lack of morals and respect for others that is rife, sadly, in this world.}
