{Ed002's Note - Although I was born in the Pacific Northwest I grew up in California but way north of where the problems are around Greater Los Angeles. Obviously this is a very sad state of affairs. Whilst SoCal Gas were looking to start burning off some of the leaking gas but there were a number of legal hurdles in the way and that plan was scrapped in favour of putting relief pipes in and then sealing the storage tanks with concrete. I am not that close to the story but I am aware that SoCal Gas has now to deal with a number of lawsuits that perhaps have waited until a solution is in place. I have a colleague who lives in the San Fernando Valley close to Porter Ranch and I have seen some messages from him to other colleagues about a number of environmenta issues - but I have not been following it.}
