The systematic eradication of the minority Armenian population from their ancient country in what is now Turkey by the Ottoman Empire (now Turkey) government is known as the Armenian Genocide.
It was carried out during World War I and involved the forced expulsion of women, children, the elderly, and the disabled on death marches into the Syrian Desert, as well as the massacre and forced labour of the able-bodied male populace.
An estimated 1.5 million Armenians are thought to have died as a result of the Armenian Genocide.
It is the second most studied episode of genocide after the Holocaust and is recognised as one of the first modern genocides due to the planned way in which the killings were carried out to eradicate the Armenian population. Raphael Lemkin coined the term "genocide" to characterise the treatment of the Armenian people.
In the documentary, reference is made to the revolutionary group in Turkey known as the Young Turks, The leaders of the Young Turks were Jewish.
