What I would like to propose and please people and eds give me your views on why this may not have happened.
If we as early life forms evolved from coming out of the water to the becoming dinosaurs then mammals through forced selection (ie-comet if thats what you believe) then into monkeys and various different humanoids (sorry dont know proper term) to become the apex predator we are today so more advanced than any other creature (I know not all of us but its still valid).
So if we have done all this how come sea life where all life began which would have been nearly completely undamaged by any comet hasnt evolved around us and become the apex predator we have I mean surley they had the same opportunities we have to evolve why not underwater intelligence it is baffling to think that it is like we have been given a gift that no other animal has we are a complete oddity in the whole evolution cycle.
Now I have my own ideas and will be happy to share them but just think for a second it is almost like we are physically a billion years more advanced than anything on this planet which has all had the same trials and tribulations we have sure it makes sense that the land should have a super intelligent apex predator but why not the sea or the air.
Kopping a feel {Ed001's Note - for starters, we don't actually know that much about the sea, so there could easily be hidden predators. For second, we are now having to completely re-evaluate our beliefs on animal intelligence, especially sea creatures. Orca/Killer Whales, for example, have shown themselves to have a much higher level of intelligence than we believed possible. They are highly adaptable killers, able to learn new ways to catch and eat prey. They also teach their young how to use the previously learnt methods, so they can pass it down through the generations. There are packs that have evolved to become highly specialised shark killers, which has also led to an improvement in our understanding of sharks. We have learnt they have a highly evolved intelligence too, and a way of telling each other when Orca are in the area, so they can then find different hunting grounds until they go. The main reason we became quite so far above other creatures is our use of tools, more than anything else. But adapting limbs to use tools, like we do on land, would be more of a hindrance than a help underwater. Until you reach the kind of technology we have now, you would still be a prey item, more than a predator. Now we are starting to go back into the oceans, more and more, with our advanced technology, so perhaps we have become the apex predator in both environments?}
I understand what you are proposing ed but the fact of the matter is although these animals have a heightened intelligence that you would associate say to a monkey say a social creature witha rudimentary language and maybe a few characteristics that are interesting but nothing astounding.
Surely the whole thing cant be down to apposable thumbs as well I mean an intelligence like ours could get over losing these thumbs now we are so more advanced than anything we know of on this planet but why us why not the dolphin how come they have not evolved at the excelerated rate underwater that we have on land they have the intelligence and known to use tools they have a language and are social creatures who learn from others but they seem like they are millions and millions of years behind us.
im just wandering how come they surely have been on this planet the same amount of time as us and maybe even longer why no change in the shark physically in millions of years why has the crocodile not changed in millions of years surely the argument that we are stunting the growth in evolution on this planet of every other creature doesnt wash.
Its like we are excelerated somehow or maybe we have been here before(my personal view on it)and that we havent actually evolved as such but just always been the fastest too adapt until our earth recycles and then we are doomed to repeat the process.
seems like the sea is either holding back which could be the case but to believe we are the product of so many coincidental flukes that must have all happened simultaneously (obviously not to the dot) that it makes no sense.
Kopping a feel {Ed001's Note - like I said, the use of tools underwater, in most cases, provides little advantage, unlike the ability to swim fast. Killer whales are massively intelligent, they have learnt to turn sharks upside down, to take advantage of tonic immobility. Captive Orca have shown to hold a grudge against keepers they don't like, and bide their time for a chance to get them. Why do they need to evolve to use any more tools than their body? They use their tails to create a wash to flush seals off ice floes, they work together as a team. Why do they need to evolve further? They have become apex predators in the sea, they are still learning to become more efficient and learn new skills. Perhaps, in time, they will evolve further, but I do think it just casts doubt on how long humanity has been evolving. We certainly never reached the stage we are at, through pure evolution, in such a short time frame as is claimed.}

Its all about the fusing of chromosomes, you will learn a lot if you do a bit of research on this. Apes have 2 more than us and they fused to make humans, this is a fact you can throw in the face of any bible bashers...........
Matt_RFC {Ed001's Note - and they will simply say it is because god created us that way.}

Well its more to do with anomalys in the basics of our RNA then DNA which means when to slightly different fuse through natural reproductioin they produce something new and slightly different.
Apes are an animal which evolve at the same rate as any other animal and the fact of the matter is sea creatures have been evolving in the sea for millions and millions of years more than us who went onto land so surely if we evolved at the same rate and had no effect on what happened in the sea how come there is no super intelligent sea dwelling creature who has the same if not greater IQ and self awareness as a human OR IS THERE.
I didnt need a really basic biology lesson that states nothing more than our closest animal relative is a primate I was more looking for oppinions on what is this creature or have we been advantaged in some way (highly unlikely due to the vastness of the earth and we basically all evolved in the same time frame).
And if we have been advantaged how by alien interference or my personal favourite an earth cycle that means we have been at this point before in our own existence and the cycle of the earth means that existence was obliterated leaving little snippets and a handful of humans who reverted back to basics and held onto tales passed down.
But thankyou for making me all the more aware of Primates and Humans sharing basics I will travel back in time and meet my past self so that when doing my GCSE biology I might get that A*.

What about the Man from Atlantis?

Atlantis was above ground is thought to have been a place way before its time but due to continental shift was placed beneath the depths of the sea.
From knowledge I dont think any sea dwelling super intelligence resides in its borders but you get a smiley face for attempting to solve the great evolution crisis I am currently having.
Maybe my answers reside in religion.
