If you on the UN vote I expect a Chinese abstension, they can stay neutral and see who wins. If pushed they'll side with Russia.

Interesting post, thanks for sharing. He's a brave guy as surely he's jeopardising his career by sharing his story.

Just read it, and to me seems like the plot of a film than an account of actual events. Wouldn't surprise me if it did happen, but not like this.

Ah but the British, now you are interesting. You follow the Americans hoping for crumbs from the table. You used to be top dog and now you are not. The retreat from the empire was psychologically your Vietnam moment. Now you all hate yourselves because of your imperial past. There's a lack of pride these days although the olympics showed you still have some it just needs to be focused. I wouldn't really say you always follow the Americans blindly. You had the sense to avoid Vietnam. You told them not to interfere in the Falklands. Kuwait you can claim as a UN mission although you wanted your cut as well and why not. Bosnia again UN, your decency was on show and then the UN hamstrung you. Iraq 2 well that's all on Blair, its only under him you have this reputation of blindly following the Americans. Bush must have had some serious dirt. You know what a remora fish is? That's the global perception of you, and the Americans are the shark. But in a world with decreasing resources and your shrinking reputation it is understandable I suppose. You as a nation have a big choice coming. Do you allow Europe to draw you in ever tighter? You've spent the last 20-25 years ever since Thatcher holding them at arms length. But patience in Berlin is running out. Merkels speech the other day hinted at this. Do you join Europe and all that entails, no more royals no more pound. Or do you finally cut away a la UKIP? But then what? Many think you can't stand on your own. If you say no to Europe it leaves you two choices. Do you fall into the Russian camp. I think based on history this is unlikely. That leaves ever closer ties with the Americans. This is the logical solution given your shared heritage, language etc. But again leads to fundamental changes.

And I tried to explain that Vietnam and the aftermath had a profound psychological effect at a national level. They couldn't take losing to a bunch of gooks using second hand rubbish we gave to them. As they put it. They didn't understand the mind set of the Vietnamese and they don't now of the arabs. Its taken over a generation for them to come to terms with the psychological impact and this has led to them being more overtly aggressive. In places where you need to be subtle instead they've strong armed it. You have to understand the American mentality. They are a young and immature country. Their culture is all based on the frontiersman fighting off pesky natives. Raised ina diet of Gary Cooper and John Wayne fighting savages. All that talk of manifest destiny. And the war, they came out of that with a new destiny, a new sense of purpose, leaders of the free world. The American Century where American money and American blood would protect the free world from the evils of communism. This is how they saw the world for almost fifty years. And then communism collapsed, peoples of eastern Europe sick with oppression rose up and demanded freedom. The soviet union bankrupt from the arms race with Reagan and tired from Afghanistan collapsed. The Americans had won. Bush senior declared the new world order and the project for the next American century. What did this mean. They had noone to fight. Then comes the fanatics of the middle east rather too conveniently. A second Vietnam and profits for the big companies. They think they are still on the frontier, policing the free of the world. Its an interesting mind set.

As I said about Russia, we had our own Vietnam both physically and mentally. We lost far more men there than you did. I have seen the planes coming back and lost family in that s***hole. But pawns are always sacrificed when leaders play there geopolitical games of chess. Russia was weak for best part of twenty years. Now it is strong again and VP is showing some muscle in the only way the Americans recognise. This is a new cold war starting and I am glad I do not have to fight it, I suspect it will be warmer than the last one.

sorry for rambling on

Kim I am talking more about the last twenty years, growing up we were fed on Russia being the bad guys and the USA the good guys, when in reality we know they are bad as each other, I think the anger towards our cousins from across the pond is we follow them in to war after war and its opened everyone's eyes why we do it every time we see more kids coming back home in a coffin, you know a lot more about the eastern block than I do so I am not going to disagree with your point.

Hmmm I agree and disagree Franky, the Americans were once very cute, look at all the regime toppling in south America in the 50's, Iran, places like that. They've kept Mexico and most of south America a mess since the war. Only Chavez has been any kind of successful challenger and now he's gone. Its only really since Vietnam that we've seen this more aggressive approach come out. And usually in response to middle eastern and African situations. This is largely down to two things. Firstly they don't understand the arab mind. They spent so long trying to get inside the Russian mind they don't have any specialists for anyone else, although this is changing. Secondly Vietnam sent their military into a downward spiral, they had to look hard and learn. Since then I think they've been trying to prove to the world they can still kick ass. But Panama was a push over, so was Iraq, they lost in Somalia, Iraq and Afghan we all know. Those running the military now are those from the post Vietnam hangover of the 80's, young officers when Platoon and Born on the 4th July were made. This sense of being losers in the national consciousness and a desire to show that the military is not a loser has lead to this cowboy approach. Things may change as you can sense a global shift coming and we're all watching and waiting on China for the dragon to awake.

Meanwhile the Russian approach was very cowboy like. Didn't like what Imre Nagy was doing, send the tanks in. Same with Prague. Looked like losing Afghanistan, in went the tanks and we had our own Vietnam. Back in '89 when the house of cards was starting to collapse certain hardliners wanted to send tanks to Gdansk to smash Walesa and Solidarity, and to Berlin. Gorbachev had more sense and reigned them in, he knew it was over and the European satellites wanted to go. This led to my old bosses coup and that person Yeltsin taking over. The 90's were a disaster. Since then under VP military funding has increased, we have our own second Vietnam this time in Chechnya, and once again are overtly interfering in neighbours like Georgia and Ukraine.

Franky I disagree with your sniper analogy. We've never really been a subtle people, its always force or the threat of force. The only times we subtle was with the Africans or Asians.

interesting times ahead.

O and I agree the UN is a joke but when you allow anyone that can call themselves a country to join despite being run by the very worst kind of people you would ever want in charge then don't be surprised when they all support each other and veto humanitarian responses. Now its a right mess. Same mess as they turned their continent into. I suppose that's Beijing mess to sort out given what their investing in the place.

Kim Philby.

I will just say that the guy has some very unorthodox views that in todays society will get you into trouble. I believe the allegations are true but not easily provable.

Good men often do bad things andbad men sometimes do good things.

The UN follows instructions as does every other union.
Decide what you want done, create a problem, present the initial plan as the solution.
I think China will get involved once the USA and Russia escalate the situation enough and people are terrified.

Not particularly related to the original post but.
I was taught in school that it is stated in the UN charter that no country should interfere into the internal affairs of other countries but does anyone follows this?
We have constantly seen interference of various countires and sometimes even use of military power in some situations like libya, vietnam creating a bigger chaos. I don't understand why the other countries just turn a blind eye to all this. Nothing is done in regards to this in the UN (which I think is completely useless with all the veto powers. It is a joke). And the media always make the masses think what they want us think like who is justified and all that nonsense. And now we have ukraine. The people in the country have been put at risk with the continuance of the pathetic feud between the USA and Russia both wanting us to think that they are righteous.

P. S. -I am sorry if was unable to put my views in a understandable manner

I think people are sick to death of the usa acting as a world wide police force and not for genuine reasons, I think Russia are a lot more cute like a sniper were as the usa is like a cowboy kicking in a door then then blasting its victim with a shotgun.
