More than half of the people killed in the Easter Rising in 1916 were civilians. In the case of North King Street, 17 men were rounded up and killed without trial by British soldiers. Many bodies were burned beyond recognition. It was a typical revenge attack by the British army. Croke Park was another example of random murdering of civilians. You could also add the Dublin and Monaghan bombings of 1974. I'll never forget the sound of those bombs going off. We have some very tragic shared history. Thank you for sharing this Franky. I didn't know about some of the other atrocities.

Voted as the greatest Briton of all times, Churchill was never too far from wholesale slaughter.
{Ed001's Note - odd what people consider great.}

Hitler, Stalin, Churchill. That's the category I'd assume would be more fitting. As for greatest Briton I'm sure there's many outside the political, showbiz sporting sectors far more deserving.

I think the entire thing with Churchill is the whole perception of his role in the war. A few rousing speeches, some snappy soundbites and quotes.

I don't think any of the countries involved in the war had good leadership. It still amazes me how people in the left in this country hero worship Stalin.

To pick someone great i'd have to put the criteria at someone who actually changed lives for the better. But I'm struggling to think of anyone.
{Ed001's Note - to be fair, as a war leader he is decent, as he was not afraid to make horrible decisions. The problem is that is not what we should consider great. We value killers over lifesavers and that is why humanity is such a mess.}

No that's true. He was decisive at a time that you needed decisiveness. Unlike Stalin he hesitated and made stupid decisions. But Churchill also made a few mistakes. But yes he's considered great because he was the leader you needed when it was darkest.

I think Churchill's reputation is more to do with what he represented than what he did. He was the personification of Britain's determination when it looked like we were out for the count and I bet most people felt reassured and confident after his speeches. Was he the reason we won the war? Probably not but then I don't think that's the point.
