Couldn't agree more with this thread, so many beneficial uses of these substances have been suppressed and the war on drugs is phoney. People use substances as much as ever and the criminal aspect simply makes the experience more dangerous, prohibition clearly does not work.
Colorado is a great success story, nice to hear about.

short answer but my take on religion is its a diversion from the rich and poor .
how many times have we had topics about islam /christianity and judaism?
if they never existed ,were do you think peoples attentions would turn too with the standard of living the majority of us live under?
divide and conquer tactic.

Yes that's something david rohl did point out too, the parallel dynasties. He redated some of them moving them later and found it fits biblical record.
I agree a lot is parable but some has truth. I found the multiple tower of babel stories interesting.

I'm no expert so I remain open minded but I always had a hunch that organised religion has been used as a control mechanism by the elite, initially to keep people in check and latterly as an excuse for ongoing wars, divide and conquer, if you like.
When people started to question religion we were presented with an alternative idea on where we come from - Darwin's theory of evolution. This too I have trouble believing and it seems has been used by the elite (evidenced by the way it has become scientific fact even though Darwin was unsure about the theory) - to give people an alternative viewpoint.
But what if neither theory is true? What if we've been given these 2 options as a distraction and the truth lies elsewhere altogether? that's where my thought process has got me to.

Just going back to the original point. There's too many coincidences and parallels between various ancient teachings. Like the flood story is widespread across all continents.
Someone I've been looking into is a guy called rohl who treats the bible not as myth but as another historical record and he's tried to match the bible record with the archaeological record and the known records of contemporary societies such as Egypt, Assyria etc. Very interesting and obviously caused some controversy.
Another thing that stood out is that each culture, even in places as diverse as central America and sub-Saharan Africa have their own version of the tower of Babel story.
And as we all know there is no such thing as coincidence.

I personally don't take any notice of any religion, If religions are meant to be peaceful then why are they always against each other and fighting.

I have had a few mates pass away from heroin overdoses Kim, so I certainly know the devastation the drug can cause. And I wouldn't necessary think it entirely wise to legalise it, along with other hard drugs. But making them illegal isn't proving the wisest thing ever. Especially when Big Pharma sells heroin, ice and coke just labelled under different names.
If anyone has the time I highly recommend watching Oxycotin Express. Its a doco outlining just how involved (or uninvolved) the government is in allowing the public to become addicted to the most addictive pharma drugs on the planet. They know claim more american lives from accidental overdoses then car accidents, nation wide.

A side note - Colorado just announced it raised more money in taxes from Marijuana than Alcohol.
With violence down in all forms, as well as drunk driving related incidents, I think people would struggle to argue that the legalisation of weed could be perceived as anything other than a positive.

And his appointment of shadow secretary for defra is a woman who once raised in parliament a debate on the effects of cows on global warming.
Wasn't there a film that said the rising temperature would melt the ice caps and the resulting cold water hitting the ocean would alter the gulf stream causing an ice age?

I raised heroin because a friend of mine had a child who unfortunately fell in with the wrong people. Do I've seen some of the damage it can cause.
As I said I've no problem legalising something as then the product can be controlled, made safer, and proper support put in place. The money raised can be put to good use. Imagine the tax boost an all of it going to the health service.
However anyone persisting in illegal activity, especially the major players I would be harsh on.

You are not alone with your stance on the harder substances Kim. What I'd suggest isasking yourself a few simple questions. Even though herion (will use it as the example but you can exchange it for any substance) is illegal, is it still widely abused? If your child was an addict, would you prefer they were using it in a safe environment, and using a regulated product, or a product cut with a number of dangerous substances in an unsafe place, purchasing it from a dangerous and often violent person?
I don't use the harder substances much these days. On the odd occasion I might have some coke with some friends on a big night out. But I know these substances offer little benefits, and do a lot of harm in society. But I think most of the problems we see are caused because the drugs are unregulated and controlled by criminal groups.
Like both Ed and Herbie pointed out, Colorado has seen massive benefits from the legalisation of marijuana. Taxes are created over $1m a month that is going directly to Education and Health. Drunk driving has gone down 80%, and with it drunk driving related accidents. Alcohol related crime is down. As is domestic violence.
We've often told that weed is a gateway drug. Which it is. But that gateway can have amazingly positive impacts on your life, if it leads you to other plants. Or it can be negative and lead you to a life of addiction. Its just a path. Humans are what choose the outcome, whether negative or positive. Everyone is different so it varies. But, like everything, the key to combat drug abuse is transparent education. Not fear mongering.
Rupert Shelldrake, an Englishman and evolutionary biologist has discovered something in rats he calls morphic resonance. The theory states that once a rat has undertaken an activity, it becomes increasingly easier for other rats, in ever corner of the globe to do the same task. Instantly. His experiments show it too be true. My belief is that we are shown constantly negative things about drugs, and how they have ruined peoples lives, so that its easier to ruin our own.
