And yet for the apparent lack of security surrounding the outside of grounds at the French euros (russian fans extremely and to a lesser extent just drunk english fans) a few months ago people tried to blow up stade de France. Yet not even a murmur of any trouble concerning terrorism at the tournament.
Funny you mention John Smith ed. I posted about this a couple of weeks ago when the whole brexit thing was going on. I was quite young when he died but my step father who was a socialist at heart but had always voted tory for as long as I remember mentioned him as someone who would get his vote for whatever reason, what little I know gave the impression that he was as honest as they came in a politician sense and was fairly genuine. My parents brought me up to believe that in general politicians were untrustworthy and some more untrustworthy than others. If there were any honest politicians then they were very few and far between but he appeared to maybe be one of them. Then just as he takes leadership (I think) he dies of a heart attack and Blair is thrust before us. On another note how does Alistair Campbell not even get a mention today? He just makes me feel dirty when I see him or hear him speak. Add Mandelson to that too.

Ed/ anyone. I'm pretty much 99% sure Dr kelly was assassinated. I'm a little swayed in thinking that Robin Cook was too. Both obviously interpreting information differently regarding going to war in Iraq. Just what's happened in the last day has brought it back to me. What's your thoughts?
Boris will probably go for the job after whoever takes over.
Isn't it a 31 year low against the dollar? But they don't mention the dollar. It's about 1.2 against euro and abut 3/ 4 years ago the pound was nearly level with the euro. You nearly get 12 swedish krona (a bit like the old French franc, naturally about 10 to the pound) to the pound. Being half swedish I remember when it was nearly 7 krona to the pound. It's certainly not at its lowest. It only seems to be against the dollar and maybe Chinese currency bit I don't know how the Chinese currency naturally stands in general.
Yes ed. The other thing that's odd about this "mass" protest is that the country is in absolute disarray. Yet all services etc running the same. The only protest I've seen is the online petition, it's hardly a reaction. In france the slightest mention of a reduction in workers rights etc causes mass strikes disrupting the whole country like we saw in the last couple of months.
Here we have an online petition that's just been hijacked. No mass protests that I can think of. Apparently there were marches but nothing reported. It's the media again whipping up a sh*t storm that isn't happening.
Your right ed. I meant robust in the fact that he seemed uncomfortable. If he had come out for leave against his party I would have given him my next vote, voting labour for the first time. Because he would have been the only "party leader" who agreed with my principles.
Absolutely ed. I've never felt so proud of my one vote when I woke up in the morning. I always vote as I don't think I can moan if I don't vote. But this paricular vote I cast I presumed was for a losing vote but cast it with my heart.
It's strange to hear people discussing this vote in shops etc as a general election is usually forgotten within hours but this one seems to have people I wouldn't expect annoyed with the vote because they think freedom is a bigger increasing population under undemocratic law, if that's the best way to describe it, when freedom is actually the opposite.
it's individuality and getting along. I really feel there has been a massive positive shift these last couple of days but the media and remain supporters are saying different. I just find it really odd.
I voted leave and I generally vote tory with my head. I couldn't ever imagine voting for corbyn as he doesn't seem robust enough and doesn't seem to be someone that I can engage with. But I think he's a good person. Doesn't make him a good politician.
It's as if many remain voters think that eu politicians only have our best interests at heart. Like it's some big sweet shop. How does anyone really know what money we get back anyway?
No one has even been able to put a correct figure on anything. It's farcical and if people think that having integration in a system like that is some sort of people coming together as one happy family are absolutely deluded. Many people (lots of adults) are taking anything said word for word.
Whenever I hear a politician speak, I just think who is this person and what is their motive. I've never trusted any politicians from my early 20's which was something my parents instilled in me. They always voted though either with their head or their heart.
I've never voted for labour, yes I'll admit it because I don't think they ever implement what they stand for but I've got to feel sorry for corbyn because right from the start he never believed in the remain camp but was forced into a corner.
My step father who died over 10 years ago who was a socialist at heart but generally voted tory said John Smith (I think) was the one that he was excited about and would get his vote for the first time. Then he died suddenly of a heart attack and along came Blair. Followed by Darling and Mandelson.
Just one of them gives me a knot in my stomach just thinking of the audacity of some of the things they would come out with. Many labour voters didn't seem to realise that they were basically tories themselves.
I think if it happened there would be riots all over the place. The people of the countryside, fisherman, us racist old farts would go ballistic. You've still got a large population of london, Scotland etc who voted to leave.

Nicola sturgeon needs to be careful what she wishes for. If she pushes for a referendum what currency would they use if they leave us? Can you have british £pound currency that is in the EU in one country but not in another? Surely if Scotland get another vote to leave they have to take the euro currency. Not going to happen.
Sweden will want one too and I expect Greece, Spain and portugal to follow at some point. It's been rocked to the core. Obama telling us we will be at the back of the queue. Is he racist then? I thought that sort of thing was supposed to have ended in America 50-60 years ago.

It was a vote for lack of trust in politicians and the financial institutions. Great to see the look on some politicians faces when they realised a future step into a job in the EU is evaporating. Still 2 years+ is a long time and I wouldn't rule out the EU coming back with another offer. I just don't think it's going to be a clean break.

2 days ago I was explaining to my son about how things can work if we left and how most things wouldn't change that much and I mentioned about being british or something similar. He then said "daddy that's racist". I then said (and thought) what has someone said to you, what have you watched/ seen? I then explained to him more carefully what racism is.
I'm certainly not racist but in the last week and since joe cox's death there has been an incredible undertone appealing to sympathisers and women for remain votes. I don't think our country will be the same now for quite some time. There is clearly a resistance and I hope not too many just think "oh well, carry on regardless".

If it is a fraction remain which I think it will be although I hope we leave. I expect a big shift towards ukip. I'd love it if the polls are wrong.
Insanity is to do the same thing but expect a different result.
Oh the glum responses to any slightly higher leave results. Apologies for the multiple posts but my mum was swedish and came over her 18 years old almost 50 years ago. My father british. I consider myself british/ English and awake. Loving the way the mood appears to be changing amongst the reporters and particular mps.
I listen to 5 live (bbc) a lot whilst driving around. It's been so biased towards remain but a lot of people wouldn't notice. Giving full coverage to speeches made by remain mps and then quoting leave mps or cutting their response short. Absolutely disgusting treatment for those that notice.

In relation to the thred below. My wife is a senior staff nurse. Only last night she was telling me (and its happened a lot) she is having to work with spanish nurses and other eu nurses (who are often agency) who do not speak a word of English, literally. How is that helping the NHS? Her job is getting harder and having basic communication with other nurses is essential but then how is it the foreign nurses fault when there is nothing stopping them from working or some process by which they must learn the language.
You wouldn't let someone babysit your child if they couldn't understand a word you said to them.
If they are already here then I don't think they would have to leave.
