The pineal gland is a gland existing in the brain that unlike the brain transcends the blood-brain barrier system. That is to say it is connected to the body as well as the brain, having profuse blood flow second only to the kidney. The Greek name of the gland is "epiphysis" which translates to "above one's nature".
The epiphysis is responsible among others for the production of Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and melatonin. Dr. Rick Strassman wrote a book and had a documentary filmed on DMT called "DMT: The Spirit Molecule"

In the course of his research he injected quantities of DMT intravenously in volunteers who went on to describe the effects that they experienced. Those included but where not limited to time dilation, euphoria and a reliving of ones past yet unassimilated experiences.
It is presumed that the "my life passing before my eyes" events common with people who have had near-death experiences are an effect of DMT.
The ingredients required for the composition of the powerful entheogenic Ayahuasca are DMT, which is extracted from the bark of certain tree species, and a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), which is extracted from certain plants. The epiphysis naturally produces both DMT and melatonin, which is a wide-spectrum antioxidant.
In other words a decalcified and active pineal gland composes its own ayahuasca inside the body. This is said to occur while in deep meditative states and as mentioned above in near-death or life ending events.
Throughout herstory specific practices have been promoted that are said to assist the healthy function of the pineal gland. Yoga (union), tantra (avoiding discharge), energetic body center meditation (chakra meditation), kundalini meditation (gradual rise of one's consciousness in the body), pranayama (diaphragmatic breathing) etc.
The same can be achieved artificially by ingesting naturally occurring entheogenic substances. This latter method is not recommended to everyone due to the possibility of it resulting in psychosis in people with unresolved fears and a lack of imagination and humor.
When one lacks elasticity the immediate and vast difference of potential experienced by altering states of perception, between under and not-under the influence of such substances, may cause a temporary tear in their ability to brake. The very definition of schizophrenia.
